BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Kern County Coroner's Office has identified the burglary and carjacking suspect killed by an off-duty sheriff's deputy on Highway 99 Sunday.

The coroner's office said that just before 9 a.m. Sunday, 24-year-old Juan Carlos Alvarez was shot by the off-duty deputy after authorities said he attempted to burglarize a residence on Eisenhower Avenue in Southwest Bakersfield. Officials said Alvarez eventually fled in a stolen vehicle and soon crashed shortly thereafter.

After the crash, officials said Alvarez attempted to stop the off-duty sheriff's deputy along Highway 99. Authorities said a struggle ensued and the deputy then opened fire, killing Alvarez.

KCSO says the deputy sustained minor injuries as a result of the altercation. The deputy has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Due to the ongoing investigation, the deputy's name is not being released at this time.

Anyone with any information on the incident on Eisenhower Avenue is asked to please call the Bakersfield Police Department.

Anyone with information about the shooting on Highway 99 can call KCSO at 861-3110 or the Secret Witness Hotline at 322-4040.
