BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery and the VFW Post 97 unveiled 18 new headstones to line unmarked veterans’ graves, thanks to the help of Operation Headstone.

Along with the 18 granite headstones, 10 bronze plaques were also placed. These 28 new markers the first of nearly 450 unmarked graves that Greeenlawn Cemetery is hoping to mark.

As well as the new headstones, Greenlawn Cemetery also dedicated a new 60-foot flagpole with the American flag.

A three-cannon salute marked the occasion, as well as a Kern County Fire helicopter flyover.

Dozens of local officials and leaders, including Mayor Karen Goh and Representative Kevin McCarthy, joined the cemetery for the unveiling ceremony.
