Residents in Tehachapi have been hit by a phone scam

Posted

The Tehachapi Police Department has been advised that residents have been receiving phone calls from people pretending to work for the Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

The caller is said to have told residents their account is past due and their electricity will be turned off followed by a case number.

The caller then tells the resident to get a money order to pay the balance due.

Officials with the police department say no legitimate company would request you to go to a retail store or pharmacy to buy a pre-paid credit card or money order.

The police department is warning its citizens to not pay any money if they receive a call without verifying the true identity of the company or caller.

Police are also asking anyone who has been a victim of this crime to contact them at 661-822-2222.
