Two fire-related deaths in Oildale in two days

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Two people have died in the last two days following fires in Oildale, according to the Kern County Fire Department and the Kern County Coroner's Office.

According to the coroner's office, Kern County firefighters responded Sunday morning to a burning residence in Oildale off Roberts Lane. After firefighter put out the blaze, they discovered 46-year-old Joseph Elton Johnson dead at the scene.

A postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

On Monday evening, around 8:22 p.m., KCFD responded to another fire in Oildale near Tee and Eagle lanes. Firefighters responded to find a mobile home blazing. After firefighters put out the blaze they found a person dead inside the mobile home.

KCFD responded to the two deadly fires stating, "Our hearts go out to those who are grieving the loss of loved ones. These tragic emergencies should remind us all to be prepared for fires in the home."

KCFD reminds the community to keep your home protected from fires by doing the following:

  • Develop & Practice a fire escape plan.
  • Develop & Practice a fire escape plan.
  • Install and regularly test smoke alarms in the home.
