The Bakersfield Police Department is responding to a deadly hit-an-run crash on Stockdale Highway and Don Hart Drive in Southwest Bakersfield.

According to BPD, three cars were heading westbound on Stockdale Highway when one of the vehicles drifted. That vehicle collided with the other vehicles causing one of the vehicles to become airborne and land on top of another vehicle heading the opposite direction.

The vehicle heading eastbound then drove across the center divider before crashing, according to BPD. The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that went airborne, according to BPD, sustained minor injuries.

The driver who initiated the crash fled the scene according to BPD.

It is expected that the roadway of Stockdale Highway at Don Hart Drive will be closed to both eastbound and westbound traffic until approximately 7:00 p.m. while investigators process the scene. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
