The Kern River has run dry for years, bare because of the drought. But it all changed a week ago thanks to the Kern County Water Agency.
Kern County Water Agency tells 23ABC News the water in the Kern River channel is flowing because of a long-term agreement between the state and the Kern Delta Water District. And in exchange, Kern County will receive state water through a canal.
The water is flowing down to the west side of town too. Rosedale-Rio Bravo Water Storage hasn't had water in their ground water re-charge ponds since 2012.
It’s unknown how long this unexpected sight will last, but for now, people are savoring every last drop.
"I'm excited because I like to go fishing and I actually seen some fish in there so It’s a good thing,” said Chris Escamilla, Bakersfield resident.
And always remember, it pays to be careful around the Kern River, even if it looks perfectly calm.
