BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — In the Central Valley, it's not uncommon to see something slithering in front of you. Snake encounters can be quite common, and that's why it's important to know what to do if you come across one.

Dr. Nick Brandehoff of the Asclepius Snakebite Foundation said the most common snakes for the Bakersfield area include king snakes, gopher snakes, garter snakes and rattlesnakes.

Brandehoff said the most important thing to keep in mind when you see a snake is to just leave it alone. He said most snakes will typically mind their own business and not bother most people.

If you do get bitten by a snake and you suspect it's a venomous snake, immediately call 911. The next step is also to get to a hospital.

Brandehoff said the best way to slow the spread of venom through the body is to not move the limb.
