Woman convicted for killing in 2019 found dead in Kern County jail

The woman convicted of shooting and killing a man in Bakersfield back in 2019 after she was caught trying to steal a bike has died in jail.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — The woman convicted of shooting and killing a man in Bakersfield back in 2019 after she was caught trying to steal a bike has died in jail.

Marvinesha Shawnee Johnson was found unresponsive at the Lerdo Pre-Trial facility on December 26.

According to a release from the Kern County Coroner's Office, life-saving efforts were not successful and she was declared dead at the scene.

She was convicted of the second-degree murder of Brent Cannady in November and was awaiting sentencing. She was facing 40 years to life in prision.

The coroner's office will do an autopsy to determine her cause and manner of death.
