UPDATE: One inmate escapee in custody, other man still at-large

(UPDATE 9:30 A.M.): The Shafter Police Department and the Kern County Sheriff's Office said they have cleared the area of Aspen Way in their search for the Johnson.

The search continues citywide.


(UPDATE 8:30 A.M.): One of the inmates who escaped from the Lerdo Justice Facility Wednesday morning has been caught in Shafter.

The City of Shafter announced David Palms was arrested by Shafter Police. Tyrone Johnson is still at-large and believed to be in the area of Aspen Way in Shafter.

There is a heavy presence of law enforcement in the area with the Kern County Sheriff's Office joining efforts with the Shafter Police Department. Chief Zimmermann asks the community to remain vigilant.

The two men arrested in the case of the shooting death of a 3-year-old in 2017 escaped the Lerdo Justice Facility early Wednesday.

David Reagan Palms and Tyrone Deangelo Johnson are considered armed and dangerous.

Palms and Johnson were in jail awaiting trial for the shooting of Major Sutton, along with his pregnant mother and older brother on Nov. 10, 2017. They were due back in court in July after a hearing to reset the trial date on April 2.

According to KCSO, the two escaped at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Palms, 22, is 5-foot, 6-inches tall, weighing160 pounds with brown eyes.

Johnso, 24, is 5-foot, 7-inches tall, weighing 160 pounds and also has brown eyes.

Visitation and guest services will be shut down until further notice.
