California has hit a new record for mail-in ballots cast this election season. According to the state, more than one million Californians have already returned their mail-in ballots.

This high number marks the most ballots collected by mail at this point in any state election. According to the LA County registrar recorders office nearly half of the mail-in ballots come from LA County.

Election officials say the huge numbers of mail-in ballots could make counting the votes more complicated and mean longer waits to determine the outcome of close races. And early voting numbers keep growing across the United States.

Earlier this week data from Edison Research said 7.3 million Americans had already cast their ballot. Now the Associated Press shows that number is at more than 17 million! That total already represents 12-percent of all votes cast in the 2016 election even with eight states not reporting data yet.

Voters still have more than two weeks to cast a ballot.

Election experts are predicting a record turnout this season with an estimated 150 million votes.

Meanwhile, a group of U.S. black scholars and activists have launched a new project to fight misleading information online around voting. The project called "National Black Cultural Information Trust" combats fake social media accounts aimed to discourage black voters from taking part in elections.

The project's founder says some accounts use the social media #adosmovement -- which stands for American Descendants of Slavery to encourage black voters to skip the presidential election.
